Wonderful World of Wool Event: Day 4

Wonderful World of Wool Event: Day 4

About Sloomb/SustainablebabyishTM
[their site]

Before starting this event, I was pretty committed to trying to get every type of wool diapering option to compare. The only one I didn't own was a pair of longies. Sloomb was nice enough to sponsor a pair and another for giveaway!!!
I was really excited to try these out on my daughter. As I have mentioned in previous posts, we live in Alaska. It's important to find articles of clothing that are warm and comfortable. With wool being temperature regulating, she can wear these longies year round!
Sloomb ships the longies non-lanolized due to allergies your babe may have so you have to prep the longies before use. This is common with most wool products you buy online that are new [not made with up-cycled materials]. I used Eucalan No Rinse Wool Wash which can also be purchased from Sloomb's website.
It was easy to use and evenly lanolized my wool covers. Once the longies were lanolized, and had dried completely, they were ready for use. Just a warning though, wool takes a lot longer to dry than your average cloth diaper. Part of the washing process is to roll up the cover in a towel and squeeze excess water from it before laying flat to dry. It can be difficult to get most of water out of the cover because you can only squeeze the water out, never wring out the covers, it can warp them. After about a day or two the longies were ready to wear.

I can't stress enough, the importance of measuring your child before ordering. I measured "Turtle" before ordering knowing that its more important that the waist was going to fit and not so much the length. So I ordered her the Medium long. They fit her perfectly, and the length is fine when she's wearing shoes.
While wearing her new longies she was also wearing a fitted diaper I had made her. You can check out our fitteds on our website: Modified Momma Creations.
Turtle wore the diaper at different times of day, including overnight, with the same result. No leaks! These longies are near bulletproof!

After use I let them air dry before re-using. This allows the wool to 'clean itself'. Wool is naturally antibacterial and only needs to be washed once every few weeks depending on how often you use them.
I washed these longies twice in the time I've had them and they still look brand new. Because of the gentle way you have to wash them, it keep them looking new longer.

Sloomb will be giving away a free pair of longies [retail=$65!] to one of our lucky fans!!

Babybumz Ouch~ee Spray Review & Giveaway!

Babybumz Natural Skincare for Babies and Moms allowed me to review one of her Brand New products, "Ouch-EE is a natural, organic, preservative free solution that is used to clean & aid in healing cuts, scrapes, burnes, bug bites, blisters and owee's that always find your little ones. A NO sting witch hazel based solution packed full of ingredients that will help to stop bleeding, reduce inflammation, fight off bacteria & infection all while cleaning the wound.

Ouch-EE comes in a 2 oz spray bottle that is perfect for your medicine cabinet or your diaper bag, for $6.95." You can buy some HERE!!!

We recently took a vacation to Florida with all four kiddos, if there is one thing three boys know how to do on vacation its be rowdy! I took my Ouch~ee spray along with me in my purse along with some bandaids for just in case. Boy was I glad I brought it! Before we even made it to florida we had two! owee's that needed tending to, I told the boys it was "MAGIC BOOBOO MEDICINE" that would make their little scrapes stop hurting right away! The mellow dramatic kiddos instantly stopped whining as soon as I spritzed them haha, works for them and works for me! They didn't care for the smell of the spray but still insisted that I spray it on every little bump they got. They still think it's "MAGIC BOOBOO MEDICINE", haha. Another use we found for Ouch~ee was putting it on my Stepsons fingernails to keep him from biting them, he was a horrible nail biter to the point of making them bleed!!! After only three days of applying Ouch~ee his fingers made a drastic improvement!!! He also wouldn't bite them because "it tastes gross." I need to send a bottle of Ouch~ee home with his mother so she can apply it there too! It works wonders and isn't harmful!

Babybumz carries other awesome natural skincare products on her site store as well!

The Diaper Bag Wrangler Wetbag Review and Giveaway!!!

The Diaper Bag Wrangler graciously sent me this lovely Zippered Wetbag in her Summer Sunset print to review! She will also be offering one Zippered Wetbag as a giveaway item at the end of this review!
As a cloth diapering mother a good Wetbag is a "Must Have" if you plan on keeping the diaper smell to a minimum in the house or out on the go. I love the size of this Wetbag. It holds about 3 soiled cloth diapers. I keep it hooked onto my diaper bag when I go out with the baby. I have been using my Diaper Bag Wrangler Zippered Wetbag for well over a month now and it is holding up very nicely. The wetness stays inside the fluid resistant layer, and I have never had any issues with smells escaping either. I love that she offers gorgeous prints to please everyone, nothing too "Kiddie" or boring.  I wash my Wetbag in the machine and have also dried it int he dryer a few times too, I typically hang dry it though. I could not ask for a better wetbag! It does just what it is supposed to do, and with style! I recently took my Diaper Bag Wrangler Zippered Wetbag with me on our family vacation, I used it for Diapers, wipes, empty sprout baby food packages with a yucky spoon, dirty bibs, etc.

I would love to have an extra large version of this bag to hang on the changing station in our home! I have had nothing but a  wonderful experience with my Wetbag and i'm sure you would too if you go buy one "here"
Or you can enter to Win one "here

Wonderful World of Wool Event: Day 3

Wonderful World of Wool Event: Day 3

Did you think that the only products we'd cover in our wool event would be diapering related?! Heck no! We want to introduce an excellent product for the whole family today!!

About Smartwool
[from their site ]

SmartWool was born with comfort in mind. (The) founders were New England ski instructors struggling to keep their feet warm. After trying a variety of materials, they rediscovered an age-old classic: wool. But while these socks may have been warm, they were itchy and shrank. So they worked on a process to make them soft and easy care. SmartWool was born on a simple belief: keeping feet comfortable on the slopes.
But it was a difficult sell. Try as they might, they couldn’t initially convince others of the material’s merits. No one believed that a wool sock could be anything but itchy. Out of frustration, they finally challenged people to try them. And this simple tactic changed the course of SmartWool forever and pioneered a new market transformation for wool performance products. The instant people tried them they were awestruck with SmartWool’s soft luxurious feel. They were even more surprised that their feet stayed comfortable for extended periods of time in mixed weather conditions. Instead of getting clammy, the SmartWool socks stayed dry, soft and comfortable. The founders then realized that they had to get their socks on as many people as possible to let them speak for themselves.

Hurley's Experience:
Believe me when I say, they did speak for themselves! Living in Alaska, I have to endure some pretty grueling temperatures during our winters. I couldn't have been more relieved to have the opportunity to review a product that would help me in such a way.
When I first tried out the Smartwool products, it was a really cold day here. I'm talking, -30 something degrees cold!

The scarf and mittens were so light weight and yet extremely warm. Even when faced with such cold temperatures, my hands and neck stayed as warms as if I were wearing multiple layers of other mittens/scarves made of primarily cotton. Even when I was warm inside my heated Jeep, the wool wasn't suffocating me. I figured if it kept me so warm in the freezing arctic temperatures, it would make me cook inside a warm vehicle! That was not the case! As mentioned on Day 1's post, wool is temperature regulating. It keeps you warm in the cold and cool once you've made it inside to a warm place.
That feature makes Smartwool ideal for not only avid winter sports players, but also Joe Schmo on his way to work in the morning waiting for the bus in freezing temperatures!
And Mamas... sometimes we can go a little overboard on layers for our kids. Understandably we need to be certain that they are warm enough! So rather than bundling them up like Randy from the movie A Christmas Story:

Smartwool has products that will help them stay equally warm, AND let them move their limbs.

As well as receiving the scarf and mittens, Smartwool was generous enough to also send 3 pairs of socks!! I am not even bluffing, I use these socks constantly. They are the first pairs I grab before I have to go outside!
After having them for several months and using them as much as I have, I've had to wash them many, many times.
What I do is wash them with my regular clothes on Cold and then let them hang dry so they don't warp. Admittedly, my husband has been guilty of throwing them in the dryer several times... and even then they are just fine. They still look great, excellent used condition.
Smartwool has TONS of socks to choose from on their site, with really awesome prints. You can even find the perfect socks for your weather situation. They make them with varying degrees of weight to help keep you warm, and cushion to help keep you comfortable. They also make them in lengths that range from the hidden sock [great for the jogging shoes!] to tights [great for extra under clothes layers].

Apology

Dear Fans of Modified Momma Reviews,

I need to apologize for my inactivity these past few days. I have promised to keep up with my responsibilities and haven't come through with that promise. You fans deserve to have the content be posted as it is publicly scheduled to be posted. Nikki and have always strived to do everything relating to the blog and shop in a timely manner. However, my 13 month old daughter has been sick this past week, so sick that we've had to go to the hospital and she's taking a ton of medications.
My daughter has never been sick before. Besides the occasional irritability that comes with teething, she has been the picture of health. Now that she has come down with something she's clingy and whiny, and just wants to be held all the time. The only time I have a chance to post is when she's asleep [and not sleeping on me]. Even when I do get a chance to get on the computer I've been really distracted. I'm sure the fellow mommy readers on here can understand.
I can't apologize enough, really, I hope that you all can forgive my inactivity for a couple more days. I'm sure she'll be better by then. The antibiotics seem to be having a little bit of an effect but we go back to the hospital tomorrow to have more tests done. Hopefully I'll know more by then.
The Wool Event post that should have gone up on Tuesday will be posted in the next couple days, just as soon as I have time to sit down and perfect the post. Normally the posts are ready days in advance with a schedule to be posted to the blog so we can stay on top of everything before it gets down to the wire. I should have written these posts and finished them before the Wool Event even began. I am so sorry.

Please keep a look out on the blog, I will be posting winners from Day 1 and Day 2 of the wool event. That promise I know I can keep.

My Personal Experience:
Woombie graciously sent me their Organic Woombie in Au'Naturale, for review.
Like many babies L loves to be swaddled, even at 6 months she loves to feel snug and close. I was noticing that she slept much better when swaddled, but she would constantly wiggle out of her blankets, even the swaddle kind. I began researching products online and came across Woombie! I thought to myself, "How perfect!" The Woombie has all the features I needed. It stays ON, wont cover her face, and keeps her feeling safe, snug, and ASLEEP!  I love that the Woombie has two way zippers for easy changes at night, she doesn't even wake up anymore! The Woombie also keeps L from scratching herself on the face when she is wearing it. L is quite wiggly and rolls around while wearing The Organic Woombie. It stretches nicely and allows her to wiggle around and move while still providing comfort and a light cover. It will sometimes become crooked on her body, but it doesn't effect the use or comfort at all for her. She doesn't seem to mind her hands being inside when she is sleepy, in fact I think it helps her to calm down and fall asleep faster since she isn't pulling at her hair or face or whatever else is near her. I like that The Organic Woombie is well made of natural fibers, washes nicely, dries quickly and is super soft. It is my "go-to" baby item when she is fussy because she is sleepy or overstimulated, it usually does the trick.

There are many different styles of Woombie, They even have some super adorable Deluxe Woombies like This one! Realllllly Cute!

April In-Need Giveaway

Monthly Giveaways.
Modified Momma Reviews is introducing a new page on this blog. It will be devoted to a monthly giveaway for parents who would like to try cloth diapering or for parents who just can't afford the start-up.
Nikki and I both know how hard it is to start cloth diapering, financially speaking. When I first started cloth diapering, I spent 300+ dollars on just diapers. Granted, my family has saved money in the long run, we weren't necessarily able to afford it all at that point in time.

Now, because Nikki and I both love cloth diapering so much, we would like to give back. Please understand that we can't help everyone who asks. I (Hurley) will be buying these gifts out of my own pocket (unless we can get sponsors later). I ask that if you already have a significant stash of fluff, please don't enter these contests. We are primarily hoping to help out those IN NEED.

Here's how it works:
You must be a follower of this blog via Google Friend Connect.
You must also be a fan of Modified Momma Reviews' Facebook.
Each month we will have the contest info on this page with a link to the post found on the main page.
Enter the contest by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.
Once the time limit has been reached Nikki or I will close the contest.
I will email the winner and they will have 24 hrs to respond before we choose an alternate winner.

April Giveaway:
Unless otherwise stated by Nikki or Hurley of MMR:
This contest will be open until April 20th, 2011 at 9pm central time. Winners will be chosen via Random.org. The winners will be notified that night via email. We will allow 24hrs to respond to our email.

All entrants must abide by the rules posted above! Please ONLY enter if you are IN NEED.
Please do not forget to leave your email address.

Prize:
One free diaper. I will choose brand.

Wonderful World of Wool Event: Day 2

Wonderful World of Wool Event
Day 2

Welcome to day two of our wool event!I hope the first day's article proved to be informative for all who read it! Today I would like to introduce another wool company, White Elephants.

White Elephants is run by a wonderful WAHM named Lynn. I first came across her shop on Facebook, and I was instantly in love with the fact that she upcycles old sweaters to make her wool soakers. Talk about eco-friendly! She has a whole album on her Facebook with different colors and prints of wool to choose from.
The first wool soaker I received was better than I had even pictured in my mind. To be honest, I pictured what an upcycled wool cover would like if I made it. Something like this:

[a wool soaker I made]

What I received was this:
As you can see the seams are to the sides of the soaker rather than right up the middle like with mine. I liked how it didn't change the pattern of the soaker. Also, I like the dark purple trim! I think it gives it almost a Pull-up feel. That should prove helpful with potty training right around the corner!
The wool soaker from White Elephants was ready to wear right out of the packaging, she even wore it overnight with no leaks! Personally, fitteds with wool covers are my favorite diapering option and for my heavy wetter. They are perfect for anytime! I currently have several wool covers including ones I have made and two from White Elephants. Check out this one that we just received in the mail yesterday!! With a clover on the bum just in time for St. Patty's day!

As you probably read in Day 1's post, wool covers are just that, covers. When measuring your baby to order a wool cover, you should measure them with a fitted diaper on. That way you can be sure that the cover will fit over it.
Don't have any fitteds? You have several options. You can buy fitteds from any great WAHM shop {check out mine and Nikki's shop Modified Momma Creations}. Or you can put something together yourself, many cloth diaper moms have prefolds with a snappi or pins.
Another alternative I use when I've run out of fitteds for my daughter is gDiapers. If you remove the snap in plastic liner and replace it with an insert [or two for extra absorbancy!], you have just made a fitted diaper!

Wonderful World of Wool Event: Day 1 -closed

Wonderful World of Wool Event
Day 1

Yay, it's finally here! Nikki and I have been planning this for a couple months now and I love it when our plans come together to create something awesome. This is actually the first time we have had an event like this. For our first day we have scheduled a guest writer to come on to the blog and write an introduction to the use of wool. If you aren't familiar with using wool while diapering your babes, this is sure to shed some light on the confusing aspects.
I hope that this event proves to be informative and fun for all who participate!
Enjoy!

And now our guest writer: Steph from the HyenaCart shop, Bumby. You can also visit her Facebook for Bumby here.

Why Wool
Wool cloth diaper covers? But isn’t wool scratchy and uncomfortable? All those hats my grandma used to make me wear always made me so itchy. I am allergic to wool and so are my kids. Sound familiar?
Well that are lots of different types of wool out there, and there is a huge difference.
Most wool diaper covers are made with the softest of wool breeds, which is Merino. Most people think they are allergic to wool, when in fact they are just allergic to the chemicals that are used to process
the wool, or the wool was too course. Wool diaper covers are usually super soft, and are not processed with harsh chemicals.
Some of the reasons people use wool for diaper covers are:

~Wool is antibacterial, it neutralizes the urine and self-cleans by air drying
~The right kind of wool is extremely soft and squishy, wonderful against delicate baby’s skin
~Wool is breathable and temperature regulating, with reduces diaper and heat rashes.
~Wool repels liquids, and then will start absorbing. A diaper has to be very saturated before
leaks occur. A great night time solution
~Wool is naturally occurring and renewable.

Different types if wool diaper covers
There are a few different types of diaper covers out there.

~Hand knitted or crocheted covers are made from wool yarn. Sometimes they are made to fit,
and sometimes they are made larger then felted down to a smaller size to give some additional
protection by having a tighter knit.
~Interlock covers are made with wool fabric that is sewn together.
~Longies are wool pants that are used as a cover
~Shorties are simply wool shorts
~Soakers are almost like underwear used as a cover
~Skirties are soakers with a skirt attached. The skirt is usually wool as well
~Recycled woolies are made from old sweaters that have been felted and sewn together
There are a few other items out there too but those are the main ones

How to care for wool
Most textiles made with wool need to be handled with care. Heat and agitation cause wool fibers to felt. Felting is when the wool fibres mesh together and lock into place. The process of felting is what makes wool such a wonderful diaper cover though. Felted wool allows for a waterproof barrier that is hard to beat.
Generally if the wool is hand knitted or crocheted it needs to be gently hand washed and laid flat to dry. If it is interlock with lycra in it, it can usually be machine washed on gentle and even machine dried. Lanolizing is when lanolin is applied to the wool. This can be done by using a lanolin wool wash, or by applying lanolin such as nipple cream. There are a lot of tutorials out there about how to lanolize your wool diaper covers, do find one that makes sense to you.
There are a lot of WAHM’s that make diaper covers. Find one that has good revues that you like their customer service and pictures. Get one or two and see how it goes. Ask lots of questions to make sure you are getting what you need. Most of us will send out samples of the wool so you can feel it if you want as well. And most importantly, have fun shopping.

Juggle Fit Beginner DVD Giveaway!!!!

Juggle Away the Jiggle

JuggleFit, a Fun Workout that Tones the Body, Boosts Brainpower & Improves Coordination
Ever dream of running off and joining the circus?  If you’re like the millions of Americans who are now trying out new and fun “fusion” workouts like acrobatics-based fitness or trapeze fitness in replace of traditional exercise, ‘clowning around’ is now a serious fitness goal.

“More than ever, fitness enthusiasts are looking for non-traditional and fun ways to exercise,” says Heather Wolf, Certified Fitness Trainer and Creator of JuggleFit.  “Referred to as fusion fitness, performance-based fitness or hybrid fitness, it’s all about getting fit and having fun.  Although doing any type of exercise is better than none, running on treadmills and riding on stationary bikes at gyms can get boring and expensive.  People are looking for new ways to recharge their fitness routines with unconventional – yet effective – exercises.”

What is JuggleFit?
Perfect for fitness enthusiasts who want to conquer the latest trend, and for novices who are motivated by new and “entertaining” workouts, Heather Wolf proudly introduces JuggleFit, a fun and effective exercise routine that promotes coordination, concentration and fitness through instructional juggling DVDs.  According to Heather, “Although it may not look like exercise, juggling is a highly aerobic (burns up to 280 calories an hour), no-impact workout that engages the body’s core, utilizing muscles to tone the arms without adding stress on the joints.”

Unmatched by conventional and monotonous types of fitness activities like running on the treadmill or lifting weights, juggling adds an entertainment element to exercising that helps keep people motivated during their workout.  The cost-friendly fitness program can also be done by anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Learn to Juggle with Juggle Your Way to Fitness DVDs
JuggleFit DVDs are available in two levels: Beginner and Intermediate.  Throughout the first DVD, Heather uses slow-moving scarves to teach beginners the fundamentals of juggling (the scarves are included in the cost of the DVD).   After the user graduates to the intermediate level, the scarves are replaced with three JuggleFit Professional Juggling Balls (sold separately from the DVD).  “Each DVD will help to burn calories, develop balance & coordination and exercise the mind while having fun,” says Heather. Also included in the Intermediate DVD is an upper body toner workout and five minute balance workout.

Clowning Around” Provides Health Benefits
Whether you're on the go or just have no time to make it to the gym, JuggleFit can be done at home or even at work.  Simply carry the scarves or balls in a bag and take them out whenever there is free time.    JuggleFit is the ultimate portable exercise for the fitness road warrior!

·         Sharpens Focus and Concentration: Juggling requires intense focus and concentration.  Learning how to juggle enhances problem solving skills and over time, helps teach how to react quickly in various situations.

·         Improves Coordination:  Not everyone thinks of coordination as an essential part of fitness, but it is.  Whether a professional athlete or an avid gym-go’er, enhancing coordination helps vamp up one’s fitness level while making some simple daily activities even easier.

·         Relieves Stress:  Whether stress is attributed to work, family or finances, many are constantly seeking outlets to channel their stress.  Juggling is a great way to escape from everyday worries and stress.

·         Promotes Fun Family Activity: In today’s technology-driven world, quality family time is rare.  JuggleFit brings fun family time back to basics as it simultaneously promotes exercise and bonding time.

JuggleFit Tracker
Want to keep track of your juggling progress?  There’s an App for that!  JuggleFit Tracker allows users to record the number of throws for juggling patterns and moves.  Whether learning to juggle the basic “three-ball cascade” pattern, or working on something as challenging as the “seven-ball cascade,” the JuggleFit Tracker App makes it easy to keep track, with a set of pre-defined moves to record your progress.

My daughter does eat baby food but luckily we do not have to pack bottles, bottled water, a bottle warmer, and formula!!! Yayy that saves room already!!! Hip Hooters, My Organic Breast Pads, Review

HIP HOOTERS...breast feeding pads...nursing pads with PUL...washable...organic cotton and bamboo...ecofriendly...in 'Happy Hooters'

My Organic Breast Pads is a lovely Etsy shop that specializes in Nursing pads. She was kind enough to sponsor a previous giveaway with us on our facebook and also allow me to review a pair of her lovely Nursing Pads.
Here is a little bit about the product from the creator of Hip Hooters:
Why use 'My Organic Breast Pads'?
~Comfort...Layers of soft flannel, organic bamboo and cotton, cotton fabric, and PUL (polyurethane laminated fabric).
~Safe...Bamboo is one of the few fibers that are naturally antibacterial. No sprays or chemicals are used, therefore reducing the chances of allergies and skin conditions. Inherent thermal characteristics offer great breathe ability; wicking moisture away from the body.
~Economical and Earth Friendly...No need to throw away expensive, disposable pads any more. Just toss your pads in the wash and use over and over again.
~Fashionable...'My Organic Breast Pads' have a pretty scalloped edge because if we are going to leak while nursing, we might as well look cute!

My Personal Experience:
I absolutely love my Hip Hooters. They are very discreet and don't leave the "circle" through my bra and shirt like other brands I have tried.  They stay in place and don't shift around in any of the different styles of bras I wear. They come in very stylish prints and are made of high quality materials. The scalloped edging is adorable as well, very fancy, :). I love that they are still in great shape after many washes and wears. I just wash them with my daughters clothing or cloth diaper laundry, and they come out just fine.

In my opinion My Organic Breast Pads has perfected their product, they offer high quality Nursing pads at affordable prices, with great shipping rates to boot!

Maya Wrap Baby Slings at Nurtured Family

As a mother of 4 I know first hand how important it is to keep your baby close by, safe, comfortable, and happy. In my opinion a sling or wrap is a staple in any attachment parenting lifestyle. Slings offer the parent the ability to cuddle close and still keep their hands free to do all of those daily tasks that need both hands. I love using my sling in the grocery store, out for walks, on the beach, at the park, around the house, pretty much everywhere!!! I love that I can nurse discreetly out in public since it seems that any time I'm out for a meal "L" wants to nurse right then and there! My sling has saved me hours of sleep when I think about all of the things I was able to do during the day instead of having to stay up later at night after the baby was asleep to accomplish them. The HAVA Organic sling is super soft, easy to wash and easy to wear, It even comes with a super neat-o instructional DVD for people like me who refuse to read instructions, haha. The sling is so easy to adjust, the thinner padded rails are awesome, comfortable but not bulky at all. The shoulder pad is so nice and comfy and doesn't shift around. This sling forms nicely around my baby, and makes me feel that she is safe and secure. She likes to chew on the top rail of the sling. I'm totally fine with that because it is made out of 100% organic cotton, except the rings which are aluminum. It comes in sizes x-petite-x-long they have an easy to use size chart. My sling is a Regular, and has plenty of room to adjust, I could have stood a size smaller because of my height but I ordered by weight. It fits nicely.
My top 10 Reasons why you should own a HAVA Organic Sling:
  1. It's made from organic cotton and safe for baby.
  2. Have you ever tried fitting a stroller through a small aisle in a shoppe?
  3. This sling fits nicely in your diaper bag, no more carrying the baby carrier.
  4. Keeps baby snuggled close, safe, and warm.
  5. Breastfeed discreetly in public.
  6. Keeps the elements off of baby when tucked inside.
  7. It looks super cute.
  8. It gives the baby more bonding time with the wearer.
  9. Super easy to wash.
  10. The easiest baby carrier to use in my opinion.
If you would like more of my opinions on the HAVA organic sling email me at freexnikkixspirit@yahoo.com I will be glad let you know anything you are wondering about, as long as I know the answer :).
